The 1850 Federal Census for the Western District 8, Botetourt Co., Virginia, page 74A, dated August 3, 1850 records Saml Sterne (50 - VA) with his wife Polly Sterne (48 - VA) and children Susan C. Sterne (24) and Benjamin F. Sterne (15). Samuel is a Toll Gatherer. Next door is Anson C. Clemmens whose daughter, Lucy Ellen Clements, will marry John William Dodd Jr. ... John William Dodd Sr. will marry Susan C. Sterne.

Samuel apparently dies ca 1855 because the 1860 census records as follows: The 1860 Federal Census for Botetourt Co., Virginia, page 139, dated June 13, 1860 records King F. Sterne (23) with Mary Sterne (56 - VA). Also in the household is John L. Hampton (17 - VA). King is employed as a Jack Keeper [Gate Keeper?].

Samuel married Mary. (Mary was born circa 1804 in Virginia and died after 1860 in Botetourt Co., VA.)
