Referencing a land deed dated in June 1, 1838 - Humphrey D. Savage and wife Elizabeth release their inherited ownership in properties that belonged to Elizabeth's father, Willis Wiggins (the elder). Humphrey and Elizabeth recieved $100 from his brother Willis. It is noted that their brother William Wiggins had died. Humphrey signed the document and Elizabeth made her mark "X".


The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 188, dated November 2, 1850 records Elizabeth (39 - Nansemond Co) and her husband Humphrey D. (40 - Nansemond Co.) Savage with their children Anneta (15), Willis W. (11), Maida W. (8), and Sarah E. (6). Humphrey is a farmer with real estate valued at $411.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 647, dated August 7, 1860 records Elizabeth Savage (49 - Nansemond Co) with her children Sarah (16) and Humphrey (9). Elizabeth is a farmer with real estate valued at $400 and a personal estate valued at $100.

The 1870 Federal Census for Cypress Chapel, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 217A, dated July 15, 1870 records Elizabeth Savage (59 - VA) living with her son, Humphrey Savage (20) and his wife, Mary A. Savage (23 - VA). Humphrey is a farmer with real estate valued at $100 and a personal estate valued at $0.

The 1880 Federal Census for Cypress Magisterial District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 53, page 59A, dated June 24, 1880 records the widow Elizabeth Savage (70 - VA/VA/VA) living with her son, Humphrey Savage (29) and his wife, Adaminta Savage (40 - VA) and their daughter, Elizabeth (9). Humphrey is a farmer.

The 1900 Federal Census for Cypress Magisterial District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 24, page 51A, dated June 6, 1900 records Humphrey Savage (49) and his wife, Addie Savage (66 - VA). Humphrey is a farmer. Next door is Humphrey's married daughter, Elizabeth: C. W. Russell (July 1870), T. E. [Elizabeth] Russell (Feb 1871), Marion Russell (March 1893), Cecil Russell (Aug 1894), and Susie Russell (Nov 1896).

The 1910 Federal Census for Cypress Magisterial District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 9, page 70A, dated May 23, 1910 records H. W. Savage (57) and his wife, Addie Savage (65 - VA) living with his son-in-law, C. W. Russell (37) and his family Nannie (34), Marion (17), Cecil (15), Susie (13), and Raleigh (2). This is the 2nd marriage for H. W. and 1st for Addie. Addie indicates she has had no children.
