J. Clifton Councill Jr. NORFOLK - J. Clifton Councill Jr., 87, died Jan. 5, 2009. He was a resident of Harbors Edge. Clifton was president and vice-president of J.C. Councill and Co. Inc., which was founded in 1918 by his father, for more than 40 years. He was a Realtor emeritus and a certified property manager emeritus. Born in Norfolk, Jan. 11, 1921, Clifton was the son of J. Clifton Councill Sr. and Ethleen Hoggard Councill. He was raised in Princess Anne County on his great-grandfather's farm, "Poplar Hall," on Broad Creek. He attended school in Norfolk at the Norfolk Preparatory School for Boys at the old Pembroke Manor House (site of today's Pembroke Towers). He served in World War II on the USS Panamint AGC13, nicknamed the "Lucky Ship," dodging four kamikaze planes including two torpedo planes. He is survived by his wife, Alice Daughtrey Councill. His first wife of more than 50 years, Louise Daughtrey Councill, predeceased him as well as his grandson, John Clifton Councill IV. He is also survived by his son, John Clifton "Jay" Councill III and his wife Susanne Boothby Councill; his daughter, Loretta Councill Grant and her husband Charles Clifford Grant III; stepson, Vernon F. Patterson and his wife Joanne; brother-in-law, Algernon Daughtrey and his wife Martha; sister-in-law, Mary Daughtrey; two granddaughters, Leslie Ann Councill and Cynthia Grant Symons and her husband JT; grandson, Kevin Clifton Grant and his wife Barbara; two stepgranddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson and Heather Patterson Iselin and her husband Brian; and a great-grandson, Hunter Grant Symons; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Clifton was president of the Norfolk Exchange Club, president of the Norfolk Board of Realtors and served on the Norfolk Minimum Housing Board for 13 years. He traveled with former Mayor Fred Duckworth to Washington, D.C., to secure funds for the building of the downtown Norfolk Seawall and also worked with Mayor Duckworth to get the Rent Control Law removed after the Korean War. He was a 53-year member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church and served on the vestry for 12 years. He was a 40-year member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk and a former member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. A funeral will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Kalhy McKinney. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1009 W. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, VA 23507
