OBITUARY :
W. LEE STERLING, JR., 77, of New Bern, N.C., and formerly of Williamsport, Md., passed away on Monday, April 2, 2012, at University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, N.C.
Born Feb. 25, 1935, in Funkstown, Md., he was the son of the late W. Lee Sr. and Carrie Elizabeth Smith Sterling.
He was a 1953 graduate of Hagerstown High School. His junior and senior year, he was Future Farmers of America state secretary.
He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Bern. He was a former member of Faith Christian Fellowship, Williamsport.
He worked as a teenager at McEwens Market in Hagerstown, Md., and also worked at the Frederick and Hagerstown livestock auctions. He started in the bread business at Manbeck's Bakery in the early 1960s. He retired from Buttercrust Baking Co. after 37 years in the bread business in 1999.
He was a member of Williamsport Lions Club and New Bern Lions Club. He was a life member of Potomac Fish & Game Club. He was also a member of Ruritan District No. 12, Fairplay, where he was a past president. He was also past vice president of the Conococheague Little League Senior Division.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara R. Robinson Sterling, married for 57 years, of New Bern; son, Dave Sterling of Williamsport; son, Jim Sterling and his wife, Tiffany, of Hagerstown; granddaughter, Morgan Lady of Hagerstown; granddaughter, Haley Cline of Hagerstown; grandson, Dylan Cline of Hagerstown; four great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Myers of Hagerstown; sister, Carolyn Suman of Williamsport; sister, Sheryl Ebersole of Hagerstown; sister, Christine Banzhoff of Chewsville, Md.; brother, John Sterling of Williamsport; and brother, Ralph Sterling of Williamsport.
The family will receive friends at the Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md., on Monday, April 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 1 p.m. on Monday for the convenience of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 10, at 2 p.m., with Pastor John Miller officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church Building Fund, 616 Broad St., New Bern, NC 28567, or North Carolina Lions Inc. VIP Program, P.O. Box 39, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673.
