Obituary for Lawrence Hartsell - Published in The Virginian Pilot on July 8, 2014
North Carolina - Lawrence Van Hartsell - Larry Hartsell, son, brother, husband, father, grandpa and friend passed on into eternity on July 4, 2014. Though our hearts are breaking, we know he is resting peacefully with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and all pain is gone. He is survived by his wife, Martha Allen Hartsell; children: Meredith Hagen, her husband Cary and children Drew and Ben; Meghan Hosea, her husband Dan and children Riley and Regan; Mandy Divine, her husband Derek and children Lucas, Faith, Finley and Winnie; Morgan Hartsell; Matthew Hartsell, his wife Sherri and daughter to be born in October; Jeff Tarkenton; Allen Tarkenton and his wife Yisi. He is also survived by the mother of his children Eileen Good; brother George Hartsell, his wife Pat; sister Barbara Ann Check; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father George Hartsell, mother Anna Baran Hartsell, son Lawrence Hartsell, Jr., and grandchildren Nathan and Savannah Hartsell. He was born on April 11, 1945 in Passaic, NJ. He was orphaned at age 12 and raised by his brother George. He grew up in Portsmouth, VA and graduated from James Barry Robinson School. He attended Old Dominion College (ODC). He was a repair technician who worked on engineering copiers. He marveled at God's awesome creation and loved visiting National Parks, waterfalls, and studying geology and astronomy. You didn't just walk by a rock formation on a hike, you stopped and studied it if you were with Larry. We were blessed to enjoy many beautiful sunsets on the Chowan River. Larry has seen Jesus face to face. He has seen more mountaintops and stars and galaxies than he could have ever imagined. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 Saturday, July 12th at Rocky Hock Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rocky Hock Baptist Church building fund.
