Obituary Published in Statesman Journal, Salem, OR on June 29, 2009 Arlen 'Al' L. Sthay December 5, 1929 - May 22, 2009 SALEM Al was born in Seattle, Washington. He earned his GED serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He worked at IBM as a tech engineer. He was a member of the Elks Club of Salem and enjoyed traveling, computers, hunting, fishing, bowling, golf, and playing card and board games with his friends and family. He especially liked going to family reunions in Seattle. Al's lifelong love of learning inspired his daughters to become teachers and his son to become a physician. He was a 'doer' not a dreamer. He was delighted to do the cooking on hunting and fishing trips and he was good at it. In his spare time, he loved to rebuild hard drive systems on computers. He enjoyed family genealogy and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. He took his kids on interesting vacations around the U.S and Canada. He married his wife, Connie on October 31, 1953 in Binghampton, New York. When she became ill with Parkinson's Disease, he took care of her. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Vera Sthay; sisters, Marilyn Gould, Corrine Snarr and Marilee Smith; and brother, Rod Sthay.
