The 1910 Federal Census for Highland Ward, Roanoke City, VA, District 114, page 118A, dated April 25, 1910 records Maud S. Hale (27) with her husband John L. Hale (32 - VA/VA/VA) living at 1630 Rorer Avenue. John and Maud have been married for 8 years and have had no children. [There is a headstone at the T. A. Belcher Family Cemetery in Franklin Co., VA that reads: INFANT OF J. L. & MAUDE HALE.] John is employed as a Conductor for the Railroad. Also in the household is a servant, Lettie Radford (18).

The WWI Draft Registration for John Lewis Hale dated Sept 2, 1918 records his date of birth as Aug 12, 1875. He is married to Maude Hale and they live at 1630 Rorer Avenue in Roanoke, VA. He is currently employed as a Conductor for the N & W Ry W [Railway]. John is tall and stout with blue eyes and dark hair.

The 1920 Federal Census for Highland Ward, Roanoke City, VA, District 29, page 118A, dated January 15, 1920 records John L. Hale (45 - VA/VA/VA) boarding in the home of Karl (31) and Mattie (32) McDonald at 1630 Rorer Avenue. John is lised as married and employed as an Inspector with the Railroad. Maude is not recorded here.

Death of Mrs. Hale
Mrs. Maude Hale, wife of John Hale, of Roanoke, died at Palm Beach, Fla, yesterday. Mrs. Hale had been in declining health for some time and had gone to the resort to recuperate but her condition grew worse resulting in her death.
The remains will reach Roanoke today and Saturday will be taken to Sago, Va., the home of the father of Mrs. Hale, Mr. T. A. Belcher. Interment will be there in the family burying ground Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. W. C. Clarke.

Hale (29 - VA/VA/VA) living at 1630 Rorer Avenue. John is employed as a Conductor for the Steam Railroad and has been married to Essie for 4 years.

The 1940 Federal Census for Highland Ward, Roanoke City, VA, District 119-21, page 357A, dated April 13, 1940 records John L. Hale (74 - VA) with his wife Essie M. Hale (39 - VA) living at 1630 Rorer Avenue. John is employed as a Passenger Conductor for the Steam Railroad.
