Portsmouth - Norris Thomas "N.T." Newton Jr., 93, went to be with his beloved wife on Sunday, March 4, 2012 in a local hospital. He was born on April 16, 1918 in Norfolk County, Va. to the late Norris Thomas Newton, Sr. and Elizabeth "Bettie" Alice Adams Newton. N.T. was a long time member of the Western Branch Masonic Lodge #189 and the Shriners. He worked for many of the cornerstone businesses of Portsmouth such as, Wimbrough & Sons and George T. McLean; and decided to become an independent businessman himself. N.T. owned Newton's Hauling; was an original founder of Airline Taxi Cab; and finally retired as owner of Portsmouth Mobile Taxi. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nan Arlene Pinner Newton and a sister, Doris Parrish.
He is survived by two sons, Norris Albert "Al" Newton, his wife Ava`, and their son, Theron all of Portsmouth and Thomas Stewart Newton and his wife Kay of Newport News; a sister, Carrie Leigh Newton Foster; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 7, from 7 - 8 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. A private burial will be held on Thursday in Olive Branch Cemetery.
