SUFFOLK \emdash Moody Eason Stallings, commonwealth's attorney for the city of Suffolk for 20 years, died Friday, Sept. 2, 1994. He was 78.
Mr. Stallings was first elected commonwealth's attorney in 1957 and served consecutively for two decades. He was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1977 after five terms.
He was a former law partner of the late Willis E. Cohoon and was a former president of the Suffolk Bar Association.
Mr. Stallings was active in politics, and retired from practicing law in 1982.
With a family tradition of public service, Mr. Stallings was the son of a former mayor of Suffolk, Moody Eason Stallings, and Sadie Alphin Stallings Andrews. His son is former state Sen. Moody "Sonny" Stallings Jr., of Virginia Beach.
"He would have wanted to be remembered as a lifelong Democrat," said Sonny Stallings. "As important as politics were to him, I believe his family came first."
Mr. Stallings was a graduate of Suffolk High School, Hampden-Sydney College and the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.
A World War II Army veteran, he served as exalted ruler of the Suffolk Elks Club from 1941 to 1942. He was a member of the West End Baptist Church, where he was an adult class leader.
In addition to his son, Mr. Stallings is survived by his wife, Valla Nimmo Stallings; a daughter, Sue Stallings Slater, of Columbia, Md.; four sisters, Frances S. Ramsey, of Charlotte Court House, Sara A. Fletcher, of Suffolk, and Charlotte A. McCutcheon and Mary Jane A. Conner, both of Richmond; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.
Arrangements are by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home.
