JOSEPH CHARLES FLYNN SR. M.D., 86, of Orlando joined his loving wife Jane in heaven on Thursday, June 10. He lived a long and productive life and died from complications of a happy heart. Dr. Flynn was an Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Pediatric Orthopedics. He was born on April 29, 1924 in Gloucester, NJ. He was a proud veteran of the US Army serving in World War II, landing in Normandy and marching through Europe to the completion of the war. Once home he attended and graduated LaSalle College, Philadelphia in 1947 and attended Jefferson Medical College graduating in 1951. He completed his internship at Orange Memorial Hospital, Orlando and returned to Jefferson Medical College where he trained to become and Orthopedic Surgeon. He spent a final year at Pennsylvania State Hospital for Crippled Children which became his passion as a physician. He has practiced a unique brand of Orthopedic Surgery since 1958 and was the first Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon in Orlando. He held many positions of leadership in local and national Orthopedic Societies, as well as in local hospitals. He was a wonderful and caring physician who touched the lives of thousands. In 1950, Dr. Flynn married the love of his life, Jane Bourne and together they formed a loving union for over 56 years raising and nurturing five children, Kathy Carnevale (Charlie), Patti Durfee (Tim), Joe Jr. M.D. (Jeanne), Marigrace Anderson (Chris), and John (Teresa). Together they held court over a family that has grown to include 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Dr. Flynn is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and his many, many very special friends. He was heavily involved in community service, including Florida Easter Seals, Florida Elks Hospital where he served as Medical Director and numerous Catholic Charities. Dr. Flynn was a devoted Roman Catholic and has been a member of The Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Orlando since 1967, prominently positioned in the third pew. The family is pleased to receive friends and family for a celebration of Dr. Flynn's life with a viewing and Catholic prayer service on Thursday June 17 at Carey-Hand Colonial Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at The Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Oleander Drive in Orlando on Friday June 18 at 10 a.m. with interment following at Greenwood Cemetery, Father Brian Sheridan presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations in the name of Joseph C. Flynn Sr. MD, to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children where a fund will soon be set up in his name for advancement of the medical treatment of children.
