Name: Levi D. Gutshall
Birth: 1839 - Cumberland Co., PA
Death: Apr. 2, 1916 - Cumberland Co., PA
The son of John & Elizabeth Gutshall, in 1860, he was a carpenter living with his family in Monroe Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. He married Mary Jane ? and fathered Elverda (b. 1863), Elizabeth (b. 1868), Isaac (b. 1870), and likely others.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, and mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. A, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded during the final assault on the Confederate works around Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865, but honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865. He was maintained on the roll as "Gottshall," which may suggest how the name was pronounced.
