The 1850 Federal Census records Josiah (24) and Jason (21) Cutchins living next to W. H. Cutchins and his wife, Sarah L., in Nansemond Co., Va.

The 1860 Federal Census for Eastern District, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, page 374 records Josiah J. Cutchins (30) as a farmer with real estate valued at $500 and a personal estate valued at $1,000. Also in the household is his mother Elizabeth Cutchins (54) as well as his siblings Marcilla (15), M. [Martha] A. (14), and Adolphus (14). Next door is Jason Cutchins (30) with his wife M. A. Cutchins (23) and daughter V. C. Cuthins (6). This could be a brother of Josiah who is listed as Jordan in the 1850 census but is more likely to be a cousin.

Confederate records indicate that Josiah and Joseph were two different men:
Josiah F. Cutchin enlisted into Company A, 16th Virginia Infantry
Regiment on April 17, 1861. He was promoted to Full 4th Corporal on May 1, 1863 and he surrendered with Company A, 16th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. He was born on August 2, 1842 and died on September 23, 1908 at Huntersville, Virginia.

Joseph J. Cutchins enlisted into Company K, 24th Virginia Cavalry Regiment and served initially in Company E, 8th Regiment, Confederate Cavalry (Dearing's). He died Nov. 23, 1899.


The 1870 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. lists J. J. Cutchin (40) with his first wife Barbery [Barbara] (25) and son Adolphus (7/12). Also in the household are his mother Elizabeth Cutchin (6) and her daughters Marcilla Cutchin (24) and Martha A. Cutchin (23).

The 1880 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. (ED#33, page 320B) records J. J. Cutchen (50) with his second wife Jemima (40), and sons Adolphus (10), P. A. (7), B. M. (5), E. L. (4), B. C. (1), and daughter J. E. (1) Cutchen. Also in the household is J. J.'s sister, Marsella (30). Nearby is Hilery Cutchins and family as well as J. J. [Joseph John] Daughtrey and family. Hilery (49) Cutchen with wife C. G. (49), J. A. (14), S. L. (12), W. H. L. (7) and J. J. Daughtrey [Joseph John] (50) with wife A. E. [Anna Elizabeth] (30), R. T. [Richard Tazewell] (4), E. J. (2). Also in their house is Anna's brother G. W. More [George Washington Moore] (20).
