The 1900 Federal Census for Covert Township, Van Buren Co., Michigan, District 81, page 271B, dated June 26, 1900 records Fern Hawks (Aug 1882) living with her parents Andrew (Sept 1851 - Michigan/NY/Vermont) and Renetta (April 1862 - Michigan/Canada/Canada) and siblings Ervin (Oct 1879), Horace (Oct 1885), Mattie (Aug 1886), Stella (Oct 1888), Earnest (Dec 1890), and Carrie (Aug 1893). Andrew and Renetta have been married for 23 years and have had 7 children all of whom are still living. Andrew is a farmer.

Fern wrote a letter to her son, Don, on Dec 14, 1947 and signs it Dad & Ma, Fern ... thus she was still living in 1947.

A likely candidate for Fern's parents are Charles E. and Isadore Lockwood. Charles was born April 1833 and Isadore in Jan 1845 as recorded in the 1900 census (see below). Charles served in the 4th Michigan and records exist for both an invalid pension and widow's pension.

Charles E. Lockwood enlisted in Company G, 4th Cavalry Regiment Michigan as a Private on August 4, 1862 at the age of 28. He was promoted to Full Corporal on January 30, 1865 and discharged Company G, 4th Cavalry Regiment Michigan on July 13, 1865 in Detroit, MI.

The 1900 Federal Census for Covert Township, Van Buren Co., Michigan, District 138, page 120A records Charles E. (April 1833-NY/VT/NY) and Isadore (January 1845-NY/VT/NY) Lockwood (indexed at ancestry.com as Lockard) with children Blanche (August 1879-Michigan) and Fern (October 1883-Michigan).

Fern married Mearl Winslow Hunt, son of Charles Albert Hunt and Helen Azora Winslow, circa 1903 in Covert Township, Van Buren Co., Michigan. (Mearl Winslow Hunt was born on 30 Jul 1879 in Town of Bangor, Covert Township, Van Buren Co., Michigan, died on 4 Oct 1961 in Covert Township, Van Buren Co., Michigan and was buried on 6 Oct 1961 in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, Michigan.)
