Dr. Charles H. Rawls Thursday, April 14, 2005 8:53 PM CDT
Dr. Charles Holland Rawls, 87, of 205 Military Road, son of the late Dr. Japheth Edward Rawls and Emmaline Holland Rawls, died on April 13, 2005. Dr. Rawls was born and raised in Suffolk. He was a Suffolk High School graduate and completed his undergraduate studies at Elon College. His medical degree was received from the Medical College of Virginia and he did his internship at Norfolk General Hospital. Dr. Rawls joined the U. S. Navy and served as a medical doctor during World War II. He completed postgraduate studies and his specialty training residency at Duke University, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Bellevue Medical Hospital. After returning to Suffolk, he practiced at Obici Hospital and Lakeview Clinic as an EENT physician for over 30 years. Dr. Rawls was the last surviving partner in the Lakeview Clinic group. Dr. Rawls was involved in his community through organizations such as the Suffolk Rotary Club where he was a member and served as president. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Jolly Boys, the American Legion, the Traveler's Protective Association, and the Progressive Men's Club. He was also a Founding member of the board for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and a member of Suffolk Christian Church. Dr. Rawls enjoyed world travel and was an avid outdoorsman. In his spare time, he became a master woodworker producing Colonial reproduction-style furniture. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty-Joe Batten Rawls; his four children, their spouses and a total of nine grandchildren, Charlotte R. and Wayne Parr, Amanda and Charles Biittner; Elizabeth R. and Edwin Coulbourn, Edwin and Betty Rawls Coulbourn; Dr. Charles H. Rawls Jr. and Susan Rawls, Charles H. Rawls, III, Elizabeth and Martha Rawls; Japheth E. Rawls, III and Charlotte Rawls, Japheth (IV) and Brittany Rawls. Dr. Rawls was one of eight children; he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Sue Parker, Mrs. Margaret Bullard and one brother, Dr. Harvey P. Rawls. The family will receive friends at the residence from 6 to 8 p.m. today. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley. Memorial contributions may be made to Suffolk Christian Church at 216 N. Main St., Suffolk, Va. 23434. Parr Funeral Home is serving the family.
