Marjorie Smith Garrett
DANVILLE - Mrs. Marjorie Smith Garrett, age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2008 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
She was born in Fuquay Springs, North Carolina on November 4, 1919; Marjorie was the only child of E. F. ("Pete") Smith and Eunice Gibson Smith of Danville.
A graduate of Durham High School in Durham, North Carolina, Marjorie attended Averett College. In 1937 she married John ("Jack") Walton Garrett of Danville. They were married for 57 years before Jack's passing in l994 and were parents of three daughters.
Marjorie was very supportive of her husband, Jack, a tobacco warehouseman, and accompanied him to out-of-state tobacco markets during the summer months for many years. Marjorie and Jack also owned and operated Garrett's Tax Service as well.
Marjorie enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, homemaking, and traveling with husband Jack in their Air Stream trailer throughout the United States. She also had a passion for collecting antique furniture.
Marjorie is survived by her three daughters: Judy Garrett Slaugh of Saint George, Utah, Becky Garrett of Gainesville, Florida and Joan Garrett Bagley of Danville, Virginia, as well as 14 grand-children and 29 great grandchildren who affectionately called her "Na-Na". She will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. from the graveside at Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Joan Garrett Bagley, 249 Shamrock Drive on Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Virginia 24541.
Townes Funeral Home, 215 West Main Street is in charge of arrangements for the Garrett family.

Marjorie married John Walton (Jack) Garrett, son of Albert Earle Garrett Sr. and Mattie Sue Webb Blackwell, on 14 May 1938 in Grace Baptist Church, Durham Co., N.C. (John Walton (Jack) Garrett was born on 21 Feb 1914 in Reidsville, Rockingham Co., NC and died on 20 May 1994 in Danville, VA.)
