Spencer Adkins
General Notes: Spencer enlisted in Co. I , 21st Virginia Infantry on June 6, 1861. Co. I was known as The Turkey Cock Grays due to the fact that most of the soldiers came from the Turkey Cock Mountain area of Henry/Pittsylvania Co., Va. Spencer was promoted to Corporal in April 1862 but was Court Martialed in March and April of 1863 for being AWOL from June to Dec of 1862. He lost 6 months pay and was reinstated. He deserted in July 1863 and later imprisoned in Camp Thunder. He rejoined his unit and served faithfully until captured at Winchester, Va. Sept. 24, 1864. He was transferred to Point Lookout Prison and exchanged in March 1865. Spencer married Elizabeth Francis Adkins, daughter of Jackson Adkins and Elizabeth Adkins, on 2 Dec 1866 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Elizabeth Francis Adkins was born on 20 Apr 1840 in Museville, Pittsylvania Co., VA, died on 15 Aug 1919 in Callands, Pittsylvania Co., VA. and was buried on 17 Aug 1919 in Museville, Pittsylavania Co., VA..)
