Spencer enlisted in Co. I , 21st Virginia Infantry on June 6, 1861. Co. I was known as The Turkey Cock Grays due to the fact that most of the soldiers came from the Turkey Cock Mountain area of Henry/Pittsylvania Co., Va. Spencer was promoted to Corporal in April 1862 but was Court Martialed in March and April of 1863 for being AWOL from June to Dec of 1862. He lost 6 months pay and was reinstated. He deserted in July 1863 and later imprisoned in Camp Thunder. He rejoined his unit and served faithfully until captured at Winchester, Va. Sept. 24, 1864. He was transferred to Point Lookout Prison and exchanged in March 1865.

The Spencer Adkins family is listed in the 1880 Federal Census for Virginia in Pittsylvania County in the Pigg River District. The census records Spencer (38), Elizabeth F. (40), Andrew J. (11), Abel (7), Mary E. (13), Lucy (9), Nannie J. (5), and Fannie R. (2).

The 1900 Federal Census, Pittsylvania Co., Va. (ED#71, Sheet 5) records Spencer (Jan 1842) and Elizabeth (Apr 1840) Adkins with children George A. (Aug 1873), Nannie J. (Apr 1875), Fannie R. (Nov 1877), and Harrison S. (Feb 1883).

The 1910 Federal Census, Pittsylvania Co., Va. (ED#89, page 78A) records Spencer (68) and Elizabeth (70) Adkins with children Nanie J. (37) Harrison S. (26). Next door is son George A. Adkins (36) with wife Dollie P. (22) with children George L. (5), Effie M. (2), and Julia (4/12).

Spencer and Elizabeth Adkins lived near Lewis and Elizabeth (Jackson's wife) Adkins and their Aunt Permillia Adkins. Spencer's wife and Lewis are Jackson's children and Permillia is Jackson's sister.
