The 1840 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA records John Norfleet, Sr. (50-60) with the following additional people: 1 male (10-15)m 1 male (20-30), 1 female (under 5), 1 female (15-20), 1 female (30-40), and 1 female (50-60). This houshold is next door to the Robert Rawls household (Robert is married to John Norfleet's daughter, Mary Ann).

John Norfleet is found in the 1850 census records, however, it appears that he has remarried and has started a new family: The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 179B records John (66) and Lydia (42) Norfleet with children Martha J. (11), Rebecca J. (10), Thomas H. (9), Elisah F. (3), and Polly Howell (16). Polly may be a daughter from Lydia's first marriage.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co., VA records John (77) and Lydia (52) Norfleet with children Martha (20), Rebecca (19), Thomas (18), and Elisha (13). Nearby is his son by his first wife, Polly, Joseph (49) with his wife Louisa (44) and children Frances (22), James (21), Edwin (16), Joseph (13), Laura (7), and Fulton (2).

John married Polly Rawls, daughter of John Rawls Jr. and Living, on 1 Apr 1807 in Nansemond Co, VA. (Polly Rawls was born on 1 May 1788 in Nansemond Co, VA and died on 11 May 1837 in Nansemond Co, VA.)
