Dorus James Burgess, 81, of the 600 block of Southeast 55th Street, Pleasant Hill, died of a heart ailment Tuesday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, with burial at Masonic Cemetery.
Mr. Burgess was born in Elkhart and had lived in the Des Moines area most of his life. He was a retired railroad engineer with Des Moines Union Railroad, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Aaron Naval Group. He enjoyed bird watching.
He is survived by his wife, Pope; two daughters, Barbara Snuggs of Urbandale and Beverly Schreiner of Ankeny; five stepsons, Jennings Crawford of Bettendorf, Mark Crawford and Ben Crawford, both of Pleasant Hill, David Crawford of Des Moines and Charles Crawford of Altoona; a stepdaughter, Grace Dewitt of Des Moines; a sister, Bernice Kendig of Ankeny; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn.

Dorus married Pope Daughtrey, daughter of John Oscar Holoman Daughtrey and Grace Amanda Pope. (Pope Daughtrey was born on 16 May 1922 in Town of Franklin, Southampton Co., Va, died on 28 Nov 2007 in Urbandale, Polk Co., Iowa and was buried on 1 Dec 2007.)
