bullet  General Notes:

Obituary for Pope Burgess published by Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa
Pope Burgess, 85, passed away on November 28, 2007 at Kavanagh on 56th due to complications from a stroke. She was living at The Shores of Pleasant Hill. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM Friday evening. Pope was born in Franklin, Va. May 16, 1922. After marrying in 1943, she moved to Des Moines and became a mother and homemaker. She lived and raised seven children in the State Fairgrounds. She was a member of Grant Park Christian Church and Eastgate Order of Eastern Star. She was entry supervisor for the Iowa State Fair for 17 years and retired in 1987. While working for the Iowa State Fair, Pope managed many young people and instilled in them many of the qualities and work ethics that she possessed. She was always ready to do something for someone else that had a need and never wanted anything in return. She was an example of strength during storms and loved to laugh. She was famous, with those she knew, for her cinnamon rolls. If you didn't know her you really missed out. Pope loved and was loved by her many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter; Grace (Arnie) DeWitt; her sons, Jennings (Karen), Ben Jr., David, Mark (Debbie), and Charles (Patty) Crawford from her previous marriage to Ben Crawford. She is also survived by her step-daughters; Barb (Keith) Snuggs and Bev Schreiner; 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, four step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. Also a brother, John Allen (Emily) Daughtrey of Exmore, Va. and many nieces and nephews who were very special to her. Pope was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Dorus James Burgess and son, John Lynn Crawford, who she is hugging in Heaven today. Also her parents, John O.H. and Grace Pope Daughtrey. Memorial contributions are suggested to Grant Park Christian Church, Kavanagh on 56th, or a contribution to the family for a remembrance at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
