The immediate cause of is death was heart failure, super induced by other complications. Mr. Daughtrey was born in Isle of Wight County on September 15, 1840; therefore had passed his 79 years. Almost three years ago he came to Franklin where he had since made his home. Being an unusually active man for one of his advanced age, he doubtless would have lived many years longer, but for an unfortunate accident which occurred about a year ago, when he was caught in a peanut picker, which so lacerated his right arm, that amputation became necessary some weeks later. Naturally the shock of the accident and the subsequent operation drew heavily on the strength of this aged man, and unquestionably hastened the end.
At the beginning of the Civil war, young Daughtrey, like many others of our Southern youths, volunteered his services in the cause of our Southland, and Cornelia Rawls, who with their son though the cause proved to be a lost cause served faithfully to the end.
Mr. Daughtrey was twice married; his first wife was Miss Martha Elizabeth Norfleet. The fruits of this union were three daughters and two sons all of whom survived him; Mrs. Eva L. Daughtrey and Mrs. Jeff D. Johnson of Nansemond county and Miss Lydia Daughtrey and Messrs. W.A. and J.O.H. Daughtrey of Franklin. His second wife was Miss Sarah Cornelia Rawls, they had one son, Braxton R. Daughtrey, of this town who survives him. In addition to the above there are fourteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Norfleet and one brother, Mr. Eley Daughtrey, both of Nansemond county and a host of close friends who bear testimony to his exemplary life and fixed entegrity, who mourn their loss and revere his memory.
Early in life Mr. Daughtrey professed faith in Christ and united with church, and at the time of his death, and for many years, previously, was a faithful and consistent member and deacon in the Christian church at Holland, Nansemond County.
Funeral service were held from the home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. I. W. Johnson, D.D., of Suffolk, a former pastor of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Mr. Jay of the Holland church and Dr. J. L. Lawless of Franklin. Interment in Poplar Spring cemetery.
The pallbearers were: active, W. A., J. O. H. , B. R., A. B., J. H. and E. L. Daughtrey, R.A. Johnson and F.M. Corbin, all sons and grandsons of the deceased. Honorary, C. C. Vaughan Sr., J. P. Gay, Geo. W. Scott, C. A. Cutchins, J. O. Cutchins, J. E. Lawrence, W. H. Jenkins, J. A. Williams, P. D. Cam and Dr. C. J. Bradshaw.
Allen Daughtrey had lived to a ripe old age, many years beyond the allotted time of man, but he retained his mental faculties up to the last moment and conversed with his loved ones in the home until the call from the Master came. His love for wife, children and grandchildren was particularly touching and sweet, and the tender solicitude toward them in his last hours was almost sublime. Many instances of these precious sentiments will never be forgotten by them through life's pilgrimage and while they mourn their loss, they will find great joy and comfort in his upright Christian Life, and realize for a fact, that their loss is his gain. The many friends of the family join in deepest sympathy because their loved one was taken and rejoice with them in that he was so fully prepared to "lay down the cross and take up the crown" "Servant of God well done Rest from thy loved employ The battle fought the victory won Enter thy Master's joy."
