bullet  General Notes:

From Emily Christine Daughtrey: "Richard Daughtrey and his two brothers came over from England before the Revolutionary War. His brother, Edward, fought in the Revolutionary War and also in the war of 1812. His older brother Theopilus had two children, Soloman and Matthew; Soloman went out West and nothing more was heard of him. Matthew was well to do and he had two children; Harriet, who married Tom Jenkins (see Theop(h)ilus Daughtrey, person ID 189) and to which union two children were born: Tom and Pauline; Emmeline married Bill Allen but had no children."

Extensive research of Isle of Wight Co. Wills and Land Deeds in 2005 by Nita Rawls Watterson established the factual Daughtrey names of Richard, Edwin, Theophilus, Solomon, and Matthew that Emily describes in her Family History. However, it appears that the some of the names Emily writes about are actually cousins to Richard, not brothers, and that "The Daughtreys" were living in the Isle of Wight Co. and Nansemond Co. area as early as 1670. To date, there is no hard evidence of an Edward that fought in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812; however, there is an Edwin that fought in the war of 1812. Perhaps Emily's "Edward", if he did indeed exist during the time period, was the one who went out west and was never heard from again...after all, Emily was recalling family stories for people, many of whom had passed on some 75 years before she was born, which was in the year 1879.

An early 1800s marriage register for Isle of Wight indicates a Richard Daughtrey marries a Phereby Johnson on December 21, 1825. Census records indicate Richard lived near a woman (head of household) named Phereby Johnson (1820 Isle of Wight). In the 1830 census, Phereby Johnson is no longer listed and Richard Daughtrey has a woman about 10 years younger than he living in his household. It is quite probable that Pennina died and Richard (I) remarries to this woman. Although Richard (II) could be the husband ... the 1820 census lists the Phereby Johnson household as a female <10 and a female 16-26 and one slave. One can surmise that in 1820 Phereby is a widow with a child and most likely at least 20 years old.

The 1810 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records Richard Daughtrey (26-44) with family: 1 male (<10), 1 male (10-15), 1 male (16-25), 1 female (<10), 1 female (10-15), 1 female (16-25), 1 female (26-44) and 1 slave.

The 1820 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records Richard Daughtrey (45+) with family: 1 male (10-16), 2 males (16-26), 1 female (10-16), 2 females (16-26), 1 female (45+). There are no slaves in this household. Next door is his cousin, Solomon Daughtrey, Sr. (45+).

The 1830 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records Richard Daughtrey (60-70) with family (image 17 of 98): 1 male (20-30), 3 females (20-30) with no slaves. Nearby is his son, Joshua Daughtrey. It is unknown whether or not all other family members are children or perhaps a new wife. It is clear that Apenina is no longer in the household. Several pages over is Richard's son, Richard Daughtrey (20-30) with 1 female (<5) and 1 female (20-30) and 3 slaves (image 23 of 98).

The 1840 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records Richard Daughtry (60-70) with family: 1 male (20-30) and 1 female (30-40). Nearby is his son, Joshua Daughtry.

The 1850 Federal Census, Nansemond Co., Virginia on page 133 (image 11 of 181 from ancestry.com), dated August 2, 1850 shows Thomas W. G. Allen (b. 1810 - Nansemond Co.) [NOT William Allen] with wife Emeline Allen (b. 1810 - Nansemond Co.) [NOT Fanny Emeline Daughtrey] with daughters Maria F. Allen (17 - Nansemond Co.) and Margaret W. (4 - Nansemond Co.) and sons William E. (14 - Nansemond Co.) and Tenant T. Allen (2 - Nansemond Co.). The 1860 Federal Census, Nansemond Co., Virginia on page 552 (image 76 of 213 from ancestry.com) shows Emeline with children Maggie (b. 1846) and Tenant (b. 1848) but without husband Thomas. This record appears to be Emily Christine Daughtrey's Family History account described above ... but this Emeline is older than "our" Emeline Daughtrey ... see general notes on Emeline and Harriet Daughtrey.

The 1850 Federal Census, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia shows Thomas R. Jenkins (b. 1822 in South Carolina) with wife Harriet (b. 1829) and daughter Mary (b. 1849) on page 163 (image 85 of 132 ancestry.com). The 1860 Federal Census, Isle of Wight, shows Thomas R. Jenkins (b. 1822 in South Carolina) with H. A. Jenkins (b. 1832) and P.A. Jenkins (b. 1858). The 1870 Federal Census, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia shows Thomas R. (b. 1822 in South Carolina) and Harriet (b. 1836) Jenkins with children Pauline (b. 1857), Fanny B. (b. 1862), and Thomas T. (b. 1866) on page 290 (image 4 of 57 on ancestry.com). This family is very nearby the Joseph John and Priscilla Daughtrey household (next page of the 1870 census records...Joshua has died). These 1850 Census records confirm some of Emily's writtings about the children of Matthew Daughtrey.

Richard Daughtry appears on the Muster Roll of Captain John J. Holland's Company, attached to the 29th Regiment, Virginia Militia, commanded by Major Joseph W. Ballard in service from 25th June to 10th July 1813. Richard has a time of service of 15 days. Also in this Company are several of Richard cousins, including Henry Daughtrey (Ensign), Miles Daughtrey (Sergeant), Edward Daughtrey (Corporal), Absalom Daughtry, Joseph Cutchins, Meredith Holland, and Jobe Holland.
