bullet  General Notes:

A register of Isle of Wight, VA marriages of the early 1800s indicates a Richard Daughtrey married a Jamima Butler on May 15, 1828.

Emily C. Daughtrey's family history notes indicate Richard Daughtrey III "went to Georgia in a covered wagon". [Augusta, GA Cemetery records indicate the family moved to Georgia in 1838.] Emily wrote the names of his children as Francis, Sarah, and Jacob. Extensive research of census and cemetery records from Augusta, GA clearly show Emily's family story of "Dick" Daughtrey going to Georgia is true. Richard and Jemima did indeed have children Francis, Sarah, and Jacob, however, it was found that they had a few others as well. Much of the family died before Emily was born so she was relating family stories and, as is usual, they were mostly true. Emily also writes that Richard's sister, Appenine, marries an Isaac Losey. While verifying Richard's life in Georgia it was discovered that Appenine and Isaac also moved there as well. Appenine died and Isaac remarried ... to Richard's niece, Margaret Jane Daughtrey. Below is the documentation of those family stories for "Dick" and "Appenine" Daughtrey.

The 1830 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records Richard Daughtry (20-30) with family (image 23 of 98): 1 male (20-30), 1 female (20-30), and 1 female (<5) and 3 slaves. Nearby is his father, Richard Daughtrey and brother, Joshua Daughtry (image 17 of 98).

The 1850 US Census for Division 73, Richmond Co., Georgia, page 473A records Richard Daughtry (49 - VA) and family in Georgia. Francis E. O. Daughtry (18 - VA), Sarah R. Daughtry (10 - GA), and Jacob K.Daughtry (17 - VA) are listed as is wife Jemmah (sic) Daughtry (38 - VA). In addition to corroborating Emily's list of children, there are also the following children listed in this census record: Adalin Daughtry (15 - VA) and Richard A. S. Daughtry (12 - VA). Everyone in the family was born in Virginia except the youngest, Sarah, who is born in Georgia. This indicates that they left Virginia around 1839. Richard and his son Jacob list their occupation as carpenter.

The 1860 Federal Census for the City of Augusta (Ward 1), Richmond Co., Ga. page 730 records "Gemmima" (age 54 - VA), Jacob (age 28 - VA), and Sarah (age 20 - GA) Dortery (sic). The father, Richard, is not listed. Jacob is a Cabinet Maker while Sarah is a Dress Maker. Next door is J. (sic, could be an I) C. Lausey (42 - Brick Maker from Lower Canada) with his wife Pennina (47 - Virginia). Gemmima is Richard Daughtrey's widow and Pennina is Richard's sister.

The 1870 Federal Census for Brunswick, Glynn Co., Georgia lists Jacob Dougherty (36 - VA / Carpenter). Jemima is no where around.

Actually, by 1870 most of the family has died: Richard (father) in 1857 and Jemima in 1868. Adaline and Richard (daughter & son) in 1852. They died most likely in some common illness of the time in that they died just a few days apart. Jacob, in 1870, has found work as a carpenter in Brunswick, Glynn Co., Georgia but unfortunitly he died in 1875. It is of interest that the two surviving daughters, Francis and Sarah are living together in Augusta in 1870 (page 468). Francis has remarried to Evan Morgan: Evan (32 - GA [later census records records SC] / Farmer) and Francis (33 - VA) Morgan with children James (14), George (12), Mary (10), William (8), and Richard A. (2 - fathered by Evan Morgan). Also in the household is Sarah Daughtry (24 - GA). The 1880 census for Augusta, Richmond Co., GA, District 123, ED# 104, page 510A records Francis (50 - VA/VA/VA - Dressmaker) and Evan (50 - SC/SC/SC - Harness Maker) Morgan with children Jas B. (25 - GA/VA/SC), Geo M. (23 - GA/VA/SC), M. E. (21 - GA/VA/SC), Wm F. (19 - GA/VA/SC), A. W. M. (11 - GA/VA/SC), and Llewelyn (9 - GA/VA/SC). [Father born in VA and mother in SC as recored but that is reversed in fact] A few doors down from Francis is her sister and her family: D. E. (27 - GA/GA/GA) and Sarah R. (35 - VA/VA/VA) Morgan with children Richard (6 - GA/GA/VA), Lewis (4 - GA/GA/VA), and Byron (2 - GA/GA/VA). [Of course Sarah should be listed as born in Georgia]

Dear Bo:
Thank you for your genealogical request; it will be a pleasure to serve you. I believe you must be working w/Candace Smith of Savannah, Ga. She sent e-mail recently requesting information on the same Daughtrey family members. Years ago, she was very helpful for me in finding some long lost relatives in Thunderbolt (near Savannah). She is very diligent in her quest for genealogical information. Anyway, we do have burial records on all the Daughtrey (Daughtry in our records). You can find them off our city webpage @ www.augustaga.gov http://www.augustaga.gov/> scroll down the e-gov services drop box, highlight "Graveside Search", and click the go button. This will take you to the graveside database field search. Just type in Daughtry in the last name field, you should be receiving all the information on each person. I'm glad you mentioned Jemimah because she was listed on our transcribed records as "Doughty", looking back on the original record book; it looks very possible as "Daughtry". Some of the old penmanship is difficult to decipher w/certainty. Anyway, we appreciate your assistance in updating this information correctly.
Unfortunately, there appears to be no tombstones for any of the Daughtry's in the Daughtry Section (we have no exact location for this section since the section was not bought, the city gave away some parts of the old yard (new yard in the 1860's) to families; therefore no journal entries were made to record these "ownerships". Francis Morgan does have a tombstone; however she is buried in a different section (F. T. Morgan Section - please find information on this section in above attachments).
[Attachment indicates: Section A574 / 10 Grave / Perpetual Care: 2nd Section North of 8th Street : 4th Section East of deL'Aigle Ave. There are currently 9 graves in this plot.]
Again, thanks for your interest. I hope the information sent you will benefit you. If you need anything else, please do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Jerry W. Murphy,
Records Clerk
