The Baker family is his mother's family.
John Doughtie Enlistment Date: 4 Jun 1861 Enlistment Place: Suffolk, Virginia Side Served: Confederacy State Served: Virginia Service Record: Transferred out of Company G, 5th Cavalry Regiment Virginia. Transferred into Company A, 13th Cavalry Regiment Virginia. Enlisted as a Private on 4 June 1861. Enlisted in Company G, 5th Cavalry Regiment Virginia on 4 Jun 1861. Died of disease as a POW Company A, 13th Cavalry Regiment Virginia on 30 Dec 1863 at Point Lookout, MD.
John Doughtie served his state and country with the Cavalry under J E B Stuart all the way through the Gettysburg Campaign. He was shot and captured at Hagerstown, Maryland after the Battle of Gettysburg during the Army of Northern Virginia's withdrawal towards Virginia.
John married Christian Harrell, daughter of John Thomas Harrell and Margaret "Peggy" Savage, on 17 Dec 1857 in Nansemond Co, VA. (Christian Harrell was born in 1827 in Nansemond Co, VA, died on 19 Jul 1885 in Nansemond Co, VA. and was buried in Liberty Springs Christian Church Cemetery, Nansemond Co., VA.)
