According to Emily C. Daughtrey, Eldred Holland was known as Dred. His actual given name was Etheldred or Eldred Holland. Ancestry.com, Family Data Collection, lists James Harrison Holland, born 1830, as a son of Eldred and Honor Holland.

The 1830 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA records Etheldred Holland (20-30) with another male (20-30), 1 female (20-30) and 1 male (under 5).

Neither Dred nor Honor are found in the 1840 or 1850 census, however, their son, Etheldred, can be found in the 1850 census living with his uncle, James R. Holland (45) and his wife, Matilda Holland (44), and their family ... see general notes on James R. Holland.

The 1854 will of Betsy Daughtrey Holland names her daughter Honor's children by her first husband, Eldred Holland, and her second husband, John Hopson, as beneficiaries.

The 1860 Federal Census records Etheldred (23) and James H. (30) Holland living together. The parents are not to be found in the census records of 1860.

The 1870 and 1880 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA lists Eldred Holland (born ca. 1835) James H. Holland (born ca 1830), virtually next door to each other.
