bullet  General Notes:

The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 196B, dated November 4, 1850 records Martha Skinner (55 - Nansemond Co.) with her daughter Margaret Skinner (25 - Nansemond Co.). Martha has real estate valued at $100. Nearby on page 193B is Martha's married son, William H. Skinner.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 646, dated August 7, 1860 records George W. Skinner (36 - VA) with his wife Jerusha Skinner (20 - VA) and daughter Leora (7/12). George is a School Teacher and has real estate valued at $1,500 and a Personal Estate valued at $3,000. Next door is his widowed mother, Martha H. Savage (67 - VA) and children Margaret Skinner (35), Willis Skinner (23) and Garrophelia Skinner (10). Garrophelia is Martha's grand daughter by her son deceased son, William H. Skinner. Willis Skinner appears in the 1850 census living with Abram Skinner: The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 140A, dated August 13, 1850 records Abram (36) and Armesia (30) Skinner with children Joshua (10), Martha (8), Carr (7). Also in the household are Georgiana Skinner (15) and Willis W. Skinner (13). Note: The 1840 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA records Margaret Skinner and Abrah Skinner living nearby:
Head of Household: Margaret Skinner - 1 female (50 - 60), 2 females (20 - 30), 1 male (5 - 10).
Head of Household: Abram Skinner - 2 males (20 - 30), 1 male (15 - 20), 1 female (20 - 30), 1 female (10 - 15). One might speculate that this is the Skinner family with the widow Margaret Skinner's (Martha's) Children living with her son Abram Skinner.

Carr Griffen Skinner 24th Virginia Infantry, Company I, Private Skinner was born October 20, 1843, the son of Abram and Armesia Griffen Skinner. His wife was Virginia Ann Sinton Ellis Skinner (b.08-20-1842 d.01-15-1927), whom he married February 17, 1864. Skinner enlisted in January of 1862 and served ten months before he was discharged. He died in the home of his son George W. Skinner on May 22, 1925. They are both buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery Block G, Lot 155.
Henry Skinner 41st Virginia Infantry, Company I, Private Skinner was born ca. 1838. He and his wife [Permelia] had two children and owned a 21 acre farm 10 miles south of Suffolk. He died in General Hospital No. 1 in Richmond, Virginia on April 19, 1863 of disease.
Joshua S. Skinner 41st Virginia Infantry, Company I, Private Skinner was born March 9, 1839, the son of Abram and Armesia Skinner. His father owned 50 acres 13 miles south of Suffolk. He was listed a bachelor and was wounded in action at Spotsylvania, but present for the final roll call. His wife was Sarah E.Skinner (1841-1907). Skinner died September 18, 1911 and is buried in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
William W. "Willis" Skinner 41st Virginia Infantry, Company I, Private Skinner was born about 1837 the son of Abram and Armesia Griffen Skinner. He was a bachelor and farmer in June 1861 when he enlisted. At the Battle of the Crater, he was wounded in the hand by a minie ball. He had returned to service and was present at the Appomattox Surrender. His wife was Sarah E. Skinner (b.1847 d.1927) Skinner died in 1906 and both are buried in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
Henry and Willis are both listed above as children of Abram and Armesia Skinner; however, the census records appear to indicate otherwise and perhaps they are brothers of Abram Skinner ... see general notes on Abram Skinner for 1840 census facts where others are living with Abram and wife and are too old to be children of Abram and Armesia. The same can be said of Georgianna Skinner.

The 1870 Federal Census for the Cypress Chapel District, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 217B, dated July 15, 1870 records Martha Savage (70 - VA) and Margaret Savage (50 - VA). Also in the household is Garophilia Skinner (17 - VA) Martha's grand daughter from her son, William H. Skinner. Margaret Savage is Martha's daughter.

See general notes on her son, George W. Skinner, for 1880 census facts where she is living with George.
