The 1850 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA, page 146A, dated August 19, 1850 records William H. Skinner (25 - VA) living with the Javan R. (30) & Jane R. (25) Franklin family. William is a School Teacher.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 646, dated August 7, 1860 records George W. Skinner (36 - VA) with his wife Jerusha Skinner (20 - VA) and daughter Leora (7/12). George is a School Teacher and has real estate valued at $1,500 and a Personal Estate valued at $3,000 including 4 slaves. Next door is his widowed mother, Martha H. Savage (67 - VA) and children Margaret Skinner (35), Willis Skinner (23) and Garrophelia Skinner (10). Garrophelia is mostly Martha's grand daughter by her son William H. Skinner.

The 1870 Federal Census for the Cypress Chapel District, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 224B, dated July 21, 1870 records George W. Skinner (47 - VA) with his wife Jerusha Skinner (27 - VA) and son Archibald H. Skinner (9) and daughters Eva M. Skinner (6) and Leona A. Skinner (10). Also in the household is the Nancy J. Riddick (12 - VA) a Domestic Servant and Wilson Brinkley (8). George is a Teacher with real estate valued at $2,400 and a personal estate valued at $475. Nancy J. Riddick is apparently listed below in the 1880 census as Nancy J. Skinner.

The 1880 Federal Census for the Cypress District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 53, page 58A, dated June 23, 1880 records George W. Skinner (57 - VA/VA/VA) with his son A. H. Skinner (19) and daughters Eva A. Skinner (17) and Nancy J. Skinner (22) [Nancy may not be a daughter ... see above 1870 census listing for Nancy Riddick] and widowed mother Martha H. Savage (88 - VA/VA/VA). Also in the household is the widow Amedia A. Riddick (62 - VA/VA/VA). Amedia is George's sister-in-law, widow of Abram Skinner and she apparently remarried a Riddick and lost a 2nd husband. George is a Teacher.
