Alfred R. Gardner

  General Notes:

The 1860 Federal Census for Isle of Wight records an Alfred Gardner, age 28, married to Sarah Gardner, age 28, with an un named infant (8/12). There are also two other children, M. E., age 5, and George W., age 3. An Alfred Gardner of Isle of Wight is not listed in the 1870 nor 1880 census. It seems reasonable to conclude that this Alfred Gardner may be the husband of the Sarah Gardner that marries Riddick Daughtrey ca 1868. See notes on Riddick Daughtrey that name an M. E. Gardner, born ca 1866, as a child in the 1880 household of Riddick and Sarah Daughtrey.

The research of Nita Rawls Watterson (received March 2004) confirms Alfred as Sarah's husband.

Alfred R. Gardner enlisted for service to the Confederacy on August 24, 1861 at the age of 33. He was transferred to the Isle of Wight Engineers Regiment on December 15, 1861. In August 1862 he was transferred to Company F, 7th Battalion Regiment which then became the 61st Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia. He was hospitalized with rheumatism at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on August 2, 1863. He returned to duty on September 16, 1863. On January 7, 1865 he was in Chimborazo convalescing from Typhoid Fever. He returned to duty January 30, 1865. He was in the evacuation of Richmond and surrendered April 9, 1865 with the 61st at Appomattox.
