Sarah Harcum

The 1900 Federal Census for Windsor District, Isle of Wight Co., VA, District 17, page 103A, dated June 6, 1900 records the widow Sarah Daughtry (Dec 1826 - VA/VA/VA) as a mother-in-law living in the household of Stephen L. (Sept 1866) and Eva S. (July 1870) Johnson. Also in the household are boarders Willie R. Daughtry (Jan 1887) [William Riddick Daughtrey - June 14, 1887], Howard L. Daughtry (Nov 1889) [Howard Leonidas Daughtrey - Nov 21, 1889], and Henry Daughtry (June 1880). Henry is listed as black. Eva and Stephen have been married for 6 years while Eva indicates she has had 3 children of whom 2 are still living: Willie and Howard. Sarah reports having had 7 children of whom 6 are still living.
Later census records and WWI Draft Registration Cards seem to indicate that Willie and Howard are sons to Eva ... see the 1920 census record for Suffolk, Ward 2, District 219: household includes W. R. Daughtrey (33) with his wife Maude (35) and their son Willie E. Daughtrey (8). Also in the household is W. R.'s brother, Howard L. Daughtrey (30), as well as his widowed mother, Eva Cofield (49).

The 1910 Federal Census for the City of Suffolk, VA, District 15, page 218B, dated April 19, 1910 records W. R. Daughtrey (23 - VA/VA/VA) with his wife Eva Maude Daughtrey (24 - VA/VA/VA), W. R.'s brother, H. L. Daughtrey (19 - VA/VA/VA), and W. R.'s step father and mother, H. S. Cofield (48 - VA/VA/VA) and S. Eva Cofield (40 - VA/VA/VA). W. R. and Eva Maude have been married for 2 years with no children while H. S. and S. Eva have been married for 4 years. This is the 2nd marriage for Eva and 1st for H. S. and they have been married for 9 years. Eva Cofield has has 3 children of whom 2 are still living. They are living on Charles Street in Suffolk. This record references the daughter of Sarah and Riddick Daughtrey, Eva; and also the children of Eva and L. W. Daughtrey.

The 1910 Federal Census for Cypress Magisterial District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 9, page 63B, dated May 11, 1910 records the widow Sallie Gardner (86) [wife of Riddick Daughtry] living with her son G. W. Gardner (52) and his wife Sarah E. (49) and children Charlie C. (20) and Carrie L. Gardner (13). G. W. and Sarah have been married for 33 years and have had 7 children all of whom still living. Sallie has had 6 children all of whom still living.

Sarah married Alfred R. Gardner. (Alfred R. Gardner was born about 1832 in Virginia and died about 1866 in Isle of Wight Co., VA..)

Sarah next married Riddick D. Daughtry on 16 Jun 1869 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. (Riddick D. Daughtry was born about 1810 and died in Dec 1891 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.)
