bullet  General Notes:

The 1850 and 1860 Federal Census records a Riddick Daughtry in Isle of Wight Co., VA with a birth estimate as 1810 and 1816 respectively. The 1850 census records Riddick Daughtry (40) with son Davy R. Daughtry (age 9), daughter Elmina Daughtry (age 6) and a Polly Daughtry (age 25) while the 1860 census shows Riddrick Daughtry (44) with sons D. R. (age 20), E. D. (age 4), Algenon (age 10/12) and a daughter Elmina (best guess) (age 13). Riddick is married to J. M. Daughtrey, spinster (meaning wife) (age 33). This is certainly the same Riddick Daughtry of the 1850, 1870 and 1880 census records (see comments below).

Riddick Daughtrey and family are found in both the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census records of Isle of Wight Co., VA. However, the 1870 census (Windsor Township, page 307) records "Bidick" Daughtrey (50), Sarah Daughtrey (45), Edward D. Daughtrey (13), Algernon Daughtrey (10), and Martha P. Daughtrey (6) with Cassie Gardner (10), Joseph Gardner (8), and Antoinette Gardner (4) where the 1880 census (Windsor Dist., page 319C) records Biddick Daughtry (58), Sarah Daughtry (35), E. [Edward] Daughtry (21), A. [Algernon] Daughtry (18), Martha Daughtry (16), and C.G. [Cassie] Daughtry (21), Jos Gardner (18 - step son), M.E. [Antionette] Gardner (14 - step daughter), and Eva Gardner (10 - grand daughter). Also in the household is a single "sister" M. Harcum (20). Note: The Eva Gardner listed in the 1880 census above appears to be the child of Riddick and Sarah. Eva married Leonidas W. Daughtrey and has 2 children. Leonida died in 1891 and she then marries a Stephen Johnson. Stephen Johnson passes and she then marries a Mr. Cofield ... see general notes on Eva's mother, Sarah Harcum.

bullet  Research Notes:

From a March 3, 2004 email from Nita Rawls Watterson:
... Now for Riddick Daughtrey. The Sarah they show as his wife in 1860 was my Great, Great Grandmother on my Mother's side and she was married to Alfred Gardner who died right after the war. Their children were George Washington (My Great Grandfather) who did live with them, Martha, Cassie B, Joseph and Antionette. I have some South Quay Baptist Church records that show Mrs. Riddick Daughtery has died. I have the marriage certificate for Riddick and Sarah and also some deeds after he died. Sarah lived until 1911.

Court records from Isle of Wight County record that Riddick D. Daughtrey was sometimes known as Riddick D Howell. http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/full_case_detail.asp?CFN=093-1897-001#img

image 143 of 147 records the children of Riddick D. Howell was also known by the name of Riddick D. Daughtrey and he and his children for the last ten years have been most frequently known by the name of "Daughtrey" and that in December 1891 he departed this life intestate, leaving a widow the said Sarah Daughtrey and leaving E. D. Daughtrey, M. P. Gomer, wife of A. T. Gomer, and Sarah Eva Daughtrey children; and two grand children, the children of the said David D. Howell sometimes called Daughtrey dec'd, to wit: David K. Daughtrey and Daisy Daughtrey who are under the age of 21 years and reside in the state of Kentucky [marked out] Alabama as his only heirs at law and distrubutees.
Your orators say that said E. D. Daughtrey qualified as administrator of the estate of his said father in the County Court of Isle of Wight County at its January term 1892 and has taken charge of, and sold the small personal estate left by said father. Your orators say that said Algenon Howell, alias Daughtrey, died intestate several years before his father the said Riddick, never having been married, leaving as his heirs at law his surviving brothers and sisters, nephew and neice, the said heirs at law of the said Riddick, his father, and that said Elmina Cannon and her husband left Virginia soon after the late war and went to the far West where she and her husband both died more than fifteen years ago and your orators have never heard whether they left any children, who if alive, would now be more than 25 years old, but nothing whatever has been heard from these since the year 1870. So the owners of the said tract of land are now said Eve L. Daughtrey assignee of E. E. Daughtrey one fourth; M. P. Gomer one fourth, Sarah Eve Daughtrey one fourth and said David K. and Daisy Daughtrey jointly one fourth.
