bullet  General Notes:

The 1900 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Ward 24, Pennsylvania, (ED# 563, page 158A) records Charles A. (27 - May 1873 - PA), Ada A. (20 - Sept 1879), Ella (3 - Sept 1896) and Emma Helms (1 - June 1898) living at 665 41st Street. Charles is listed as a Barber.

From the 1903 obituary (see pictures) we determine the parents and sister of Charles A. Helms. From this we find the family listed in the 1880 census: The 1880 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, District 510, page 401A, dated June 10, 1880 records Charles Helms (8 - PA/PA/PA) living with his widowed mother Mary Helms (36 - PA/PA/PA) and siblings William Helms (20 - PA), John Helms (18 - PA), and Emma Helms (11 - PA) living at 202 Fisher Avenue. Note: William & John are actually Mary's children with Archibald Jamison ... see notes below and 1860 census facts for Mary R., Charles A. Helms wife.
The 1870 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 24, unnamed P. O., District 80, page 129A, dated ? / ? / 1870 records Charles Helms (21 - PA) and his wife Mary Helms (22 - PA). Also listed are William Jamison (11 - PA), John Jamison (8 - PA), and Emma Jamison [Helms] (2 - PA). The census lists the residence as Rural South of Vine Street (near Race Street and Summer Street).
Interesting to note another listing: The 1870 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 24, West Philadelphia P. O., District 79, page 469A, dated June, 17, 1870 records Charles Helms (31 - PA) and his wife Mary Helms (28 - PA). Also listed are William Jamison (11 - PA), John Jamison (8 - PA), and Emma Helms (1 - PA). Charles is employed as a Joui (? - journeyman?) Brickmaker. Apparently Mary was married previously to a Mr. Jamison; however, Emma is a child with Charles Helms. This explains why the obituary lists only Emma as a sibling.
In spite of different ages, these two 1870 census listing are for the same Helms family ... there are two other families in the neighborhood listed twice and in each case the ages are not the same: the District 80 form at 49th & Lancaster Ave P. O. on page 509A dated June 8, 1870 records Wm Kunkle (28 - Carpenter) with his wife Mary (29) and daughter Ida M. (5/12) as well as James Riding (40 - Toolmaker) with his wife Catherine (29) and children Ellen (4) & John H. (3) and also in the household are Jane Stilt (55) and John High (16); another District 80 form on Rural Race Street, page 128B records Wm Kunkle (29) with other family members Mary Kunkle (1), Ida Kunkle (30), Annie Kunkle (20), John Kunkle (27) as well as James Ridding (45) with his wife Catherine (25) and children Ella (6) and Harry (3). These names and locations are too similar to be mere coincidence for 2 different families ... and thus this researcher concludes sloppy recording of the census taker for the differences.

See general notes on his mother, Mary, for 1860 census facts regarding her previous marriage.
