bullet  General Notes:

The 1880 Federal Census for Silver Springs, Cumberland Co., PA, District 71, page 156A records Charles P. Jacobs (9/12 - January) living in the home of his parents, Oliver C. (28 - PA/PA/PA) and Annie C. (30 - PA/PA/PA) Jacobs. Also in the household is a sister, Annie L. Jacobs (12) and a brother, John C. Jacobs (10). Oliver is a Carpenter. Next door are Oliver's parents, William (59 - PA/PA/PA) and Sarah A. (58 - PA/PA/PA) Jacobs, with a son, William A. Jacobs (26). William is a farmer while Oliver is a carpenter.
It is of interest that the 1870 Federal Census for Silver Spring Township, Cumberland Co., PA, New Kingston P. O., page 393B, dated July 12, 1870 records Annie L. (2) and John C. (4/12 - February) Jacob (sic) in the home of Jacob (28) and Catherine (25) Jacob (sic). Next door is William (49) and Sarah A. (48) Jacob[s] with children Catherine E. (24), William A. (18), and Samuel A. (14). This is clearly the same family listed in 1880 but Oliver vs Jacob is a puzzle ... perhaps the census taker inadvertently wrote the last name, Jacob, as the first name. This 1870's Jacob Jacob[s] is listed as employed as a carpenter which is consistent with all other census records for the employment of Oliver. Oliver's wife is apparently named Annie Catherine ... also, the date of birth for Oliver is apparently ca 1841 ... see general notes on Oliver C. Jacobs for 1900 census facts.
To add confusion to this family line it is noted that the 1860 Federal Census for Silver Springs, Cumberland Co., PA records William (40) and Sarah A. (39) Jacobs with children John H. (11), William A. (8), and Sm A. (5). They are in dwelling house 290 ... it should be noted that the actual census records are out of order in that you must go to the previous page to find the sons, William A. Jacobs and Sm A. Jacobs ... but where is Oliver???
Well ... viewing the 1850 census finds the following: The 1850 Federal Census Silver Springs, Cumberland Co., PA records the Blacksmith William Jacobs (29) with his wife Sarah Jacobs (28) and children Oliver (9), Catherine (7), and John (2).

The 1910 Federal Census for Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. (ED# 432, 12th Ward, Visit 293, sheet 15B) records Charles P. Jacobs (30), wife Ocy (25), and daughter Gladys M. (6) living on what appears to be Kelly Street. Charles is listed as a machinist working for the railroad.

The WWI Draft Registration Card for Charles Pillsberry Jacobs records his date of birth as January 25, 1876. The records is taken in Pittsburgh; however, the date is illegible. He is living at 6710 ??????? in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. His nearest relative is Gladys Jacobs, daughter, living at what appears to be a different address (hard to read). Charles is employed as a machinist with the Pennsylvania Rail Road. His physical description is medium build with brown eyes and gray hair. His signature reads: Charles Pillsberry Jacobs. Apparently Ocy and Charles have separated and/or divorced by this time.

The 1920 Federal Census for Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co. , Pa., Ward 11, District 493 records Charles P. Jacobs (32) with no employment. He has a daughter, Gladys (16), living with him. He is listed as married but there is no wife present. Charles is not employed but Gladys is working as a packer at a Chocolate Company. Also in the household is a lodger, John McClain (29 - PA/PA/PA). John is possibly the man with whom Gladys' mother, Ocy Jacobs (wife of Charles P. Jacobs) is a house keeper as listed in the 1930 census ... see general notes on Ocyola Keil.

The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Charles Pilsbury Jacobs dated April 27, 1942 lists his date of birth as January 25, 1880 in Cumberland, PA. He is living at the Brunswick Hotel in Irwin, West[moreland Co.], PA [just east of Pittsburgh in Westmoreland Co.]. He is working for the Pennsylvania Rail Road at the Pitcairn Yard in Allegheny Co. and his physical description is 5' 11", 188 lbs with blue eyes, gray hair and ruddy complexion. The person who will always know his address is John C. Jacobs [brother] of Berwyn, Chester Co., PA (see above notes for John C. Jacobs in 1880 census facts) ... this card has the local board in York Co., PA ... not sure this card for his physical description is really associated with the first card for Charles.

Note:
The 1920 Federal Census for Easttown Township, Chester Co., PA, District 38 records the widower Oliver C. Jacobs (78 - PA/PA/PA) living with his son John C. Jacobs (49) and wife Mary (41) living on Central Avenue. Oliver has no employment and John is a Machinist for the Rail Road.

The 1930 Federal Census for Bergwyn (sic - Berwyn), Easttown Township, Chester Co., PA, District 36 records the widower Oliver C. Jacobs (89 - PA/PA/PA) as the head of household with his son John C. Jacobs (60 - PA/PA/PA) and wife Mary (56 - PA/PA/PA) living on Central Avenue. Oliver is retired and John is a Machinist for the Rail Road and has been married to Mary for 35 years. [See 1880 census above that links this family to Charles P. Jacobs]
