The 1910 Federal Census for Madison Village, Rockingham Co., N.C. (ED#158, page 143B) records Susan H. Loftis (widow, 38). Also in the household are her children William F. Loftis (6) and Joseph W. (4) and sister Lula H. Garret (41) and step daughter Mary E. Loftis (20).

The 1920 Federal Census for Madison Village, Rockingham Co., N.C. (ED#210, page 14B) records Susie Loftis (widow, 48). Also in the household are her children Fred Loftis (15) and Joseph (14). Lula Garrett is not listed here.

The 1930 Federal Census for Madison Township, Rockingham Co., N.C. (Dist 13, page 211A) records Susie Loftis (widow, 58). Also in the household are sons W. Fred Loftis (26/married 2 years but his wife is not present) and Joseph (24) as well as sister Lula Garrett (61).

In a 1906 letter to his nephew Jimmie P. Garrett, Poet (Powhatan) Garrett decsibes Susie as marrying "an older man with a housefull of children". Poet does not understand why she would have done so but guesses that if she is satified, so be it and that her family should be as well. Poet shares his thoughts that indicate that he has no doubt that Mr. Loftis is kind to her, but that "kindness alone will not make a living".
