The 1850 Federal Census for Jefferson Township, Johnson Co., Missouri page 34A records Elizabeth Garrett (57) living with her children Joseph (24), Robert (20), Poet (16) (Powhatan Green), and Susan (13). Elizabeth is listed as born in Virginia and her children in North Carolina. Reuban is not listed and has probably died by then. Elizabeth and her children are living very near her sons, Thomas and James Washington Garrett, and their familes.

The 1860 Federal Census for Walls Store P. O., Jefferson Township, Johnson Co., Missouri, page 1038 (315), dated Sept 15, 1860 records Elizabeth Garrett (67 - NC) living as head of household with her son Poet (25 - NC) and son-in-law, wife, and child: James N. (25 - NC / Singing Master) and Susan H. (23 - NC) [Garrett] Thompson and child Edward (3 - Missouri). Next door is Robert Garrett (29-Tobacconist) with his wife Mary E. (25) and children Henry P. (4), Audubon (3), and Edward E. (1). Next door to Robert is his brother James W. (37) and wife, Ann T. (32), Garrett with children Wm. A. (11), Mary E. (9), Ellen A. (5), Sarah S. (4), Julia A. (8/12). Elizabeth Garrett has real estate valued at $3,500 and personal estate valued at $500. Listed on the next line to Poet Garrett is Richard B. Fewell and family ... Elizabeth Garrett's mother, Amy Wall Sims, has a sister, Ann Nancy Wall, who married into the Fewell family (out of Rockingham Co., NC).
