The 1840 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., North Carolina (image 91 of 125) records Garrett B. Garrett (20-30) as head of household. Also in the household are 1 female (20-30) and 3 females (under 5). Note: Thomas H. Sneed, who is married to Jarrett's Aunt Sarah (Sally) Sims Sneed, is on the same page. Jarrett's Uncle Powhatan (Poet) Garrett wrote about Thomas Sneed in a 1906 letter to James Price Garrett.

The 1850 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., North Carolina,Western District, page 83B records J. B. (38 - NC) and Clarisa (38 - born in New York) Garrett with children Sarah A. (14), Susan E. (12), Elizabeth (5), and Emaline (2). Nearby is the James Sharp family whose son, James Marshall Sharp, will marry Elizabeth Merrit Garrett in 1866. J. B. has real estate valued at $1,000. Next door to J. B. is Isaac Hand and family whose wife is the sister of J. B.'s wife.

The 1860 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., North Carolina, Southern Division, page 57B records J. B. (46) and Clarisey W. (48 - born in New York) Garrett with children Suan E. (21), Eliza (15), Emeline C. (12), James W. (9), Robert (5), and Joseph W. (2). J. B. has real estate valued at $3,000 and personal property at $500.

The 1880 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., North Carolina, North Williamsburg Township, Reedsville, District 233, page 128B records J. B. Garrett (65) boarding at the home of W. W. (28) and Elizabeth A. (28) Vernon. Children in the household include Ida (9) and Annie Lee (7) Vernon. W. W. is a "Picker of Tobacco" while J. B. is listed as a widowed Mail Carrier.

In a 1906 letter to his nephew Jimmie P. Garrett, Poet (Powhatan) Garrett writes of his "Brother Bole".
