Joseph Walton Garrett went to Wise School where Mr. Wise was his first teacher. He was later taught by Mr. Richard Henderson. He soon went to Griffin's School where his teacher was John Wilson. He then attended McCollom School where hs teacher was Joe McCoy. By age 16 he decided to hire out to Bill Newman. By age 22 he met and married Callie Coleman. He farmed alone and sometimes with his brothers. He was married to Callie for 14 years before she died at age 34 in 1895. In 1899 he married Sallie Jarrett.

The 1880 Federal Census for Wentworth, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 235, page 178A records Joseph Garrett (22) living with his brother, Robert Garrett (24). No one else is in the household.

The 1900 Federal Census for Huntsville, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 71, page 2A records Joseph W. (May 1858) and Sarah E. (Dec 1879) Garrett with children William B. (April 1900), Albert E. (Jan 1882), and Nancy P. (June 1885). Robert M. Garrett (July 1855), Joseph's brother (Newt) is listed as a boarder. Joseph and Sarah have been married 1 year. Nearby is Joseph's brother, James W. Garrett, and his family.

The 1910 Federal Census for New Bethel Township, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 161, page 11A records Joseph W. (51) and Sallie E. (30) Garrett with children Bolden (10) and Poet (8) living on Baggage Road via New Bethel Academy.

The 1920 Federal Census for Huntsville, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 197, page 131B records Joe W. (61) and Sallie (40) Garrett with children Poet (18) and Joe Henry (8) living on Madison Road near the intersection with Ball Hill Road.

The 1930 Federal Census for Huntsville, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 2, page 149A, dated April 5, 1930 records Joseph W. (71) and Sallie E. H. (50) Garrett with sons Joseph W. (18), and Robert P. (27) and Robert's wife Laura (21). Joseph state he was first married at age 22 while Sallie was first married at age 19 ... apparently Sallie was previously married. Robert has been married since age 24 and Laura since age 19.

It is of interest that Joseph Walton Garrett, in census records, usually states his mother as being born in Virginia. In the 1860 Federal Census, Joseph's mother, Clarisey, states that she was born in New York (see notes on Jarrett Bolden Garrett).
