The 1860 Federal Census refers to Emma as Emeline C. Garrett. Both the 1850 and 1860 census records list Emaline as born in 1848. The family Bible looks like 1843 but perhaps is really 1848.

The ancestry.com database North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 records the marriage date of Emily Garrett to Thomas M. Smothers as Oct. 21, 1868.

The 1880 Federal Census for New Bethel, Rockingham Co., NC, District 231, Page 88A, dated June 1, 1880 records Thos M. (42 - NC/NC/VA) and Emma (31 - NC/NC/NC) Smothers with children Hugh P. (10), John R. (8), Thomas B. (5), Susan L. (3), and Irene (9/12).

The 1900 Federal Census for Mayodan Village, Madison Township, Rockingham Co., NC, District 74, Page 79A, dated June 4, 1900 records the widow Emma Smothers (Oct 1849) with children Thomas B. Smothers (May 1874), Laura O. Smothers (Aug 1879), Augustus G. Smothers (April 1885), Reuban R. Smothers (Jan 1890), and Maud F. Smothers (Nov 1880) living on Locust Street. [Maud is recently married to Thomas B. Smothers]

The 1920 Federal Census for Durham, Durham Co., N.C., District 53, page 227B, dated February 5, 1920 records the widow Emma C. Smothers (71) with her children Augustus Smothers (34), Ruben R. Smothers (29), and Ollie Smothers (38) living at 207 Lyons Street. Augustus and Ollie are Laborers at the Cotton Mill while Ruben is a Barber at a a Barber Shop. Also in the household are "boarders" Audrey Jarvis (15) and Garrett Jarvis (12). Audry and Garrett are the children of Emma deceased daughter, Addie Smothers Jarvis.
