Thomas Madison Smothers
Another name for Thomas was Matt. General Notes: Enlisted in Co. I, 13th North Carolina Infantry on August 21, 1861. He was captured at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware July 3, 1863. He joined the U.S. Army on Sept. 22, 1863 assigned to Co. E, 3rd N.C. Calvary. He applied for a pension in 1891 and his wife, Emma, applied as a widow on June 15, 1894. Thomas married Emma Coil Garrett, daughter of Jarrett Bolyn (Bouldin/Bolden) Garrett and Clarissa Walton Hill, on 21 Oct 1868 in Rockingham Co, NC. (Emma Coil Garrett was born on 3 Oct 1848 at Old J. B. Garrett Farm Near Madison, N.C, died on 5 Jan 1926 in Durham, Durham Co., N.C. and was buried on 6 Jan 1926 in Madison, Rockingham Co, NC.) The cause of her death was Mitral Regurgitation / Old Age. |
