In 1843 the Garrett family went to Missouri and stayed. Jarrett Bolden and William Starling returned to Rockingham Co., N.C. Other Garretts returned occationally for visits. Joseph and Nannie made their home in Tebo Township, Henry County (as of 1860), Missouri.

The 1870 Federal Census for Tebo Township, Henry Co., Missouri, page 392B records Joseph (45 - NC) and Rebecca J. (47 - NC) Garrett with children Jennie E. (13 - Missouri), Nancy M. (11 - Missouri), and Arthnill (9 - Missouri).

The 1880 Federal Census for Tebo Township, Henry Co., Missouri, District 177, page 415A records Joseph (54 - NC) and Rebecca J. (55 - NC) Garrett with children Nancy (20 - Missouri) and Othniell (17 - Missouri).

Joseph married Rebecca Jane Stone, daughter of Salathiel Stone Jr. and Jane Close, on 6 Jan 1855 in Henry Co., Missouri. (Rebecca Jane Stone was born on 19 Nov 1825 in North Carolina and died on 10 Dec 1899 in Henry Co., Missouri.)
