General Notes:
In 1843 the Garrett family went to Missouri and stayed. Jarrett Bolden and William Starling returned to Rockingham Co., N.C. Other Garretts returned occationally for visits.
Robert and James W. Garrett marketed tobacco before the Civil War. Robert left home with his brother James Washington Garrett to fight for his home and independence in the War of Northern Aggression. Robert was killed three days later at Lone Jack, Missouri in August 1862 while setting fire to a hotel held by the Yankees. He had volunteered for the mission. He had set fire to the building once but the fire was put out by a woman with a bucket of water. He went back again and was shot. The wound severed an artery in his leg and he bled to death. He was put under a warehouse and later buried in a trench with other confederates.
After Robert's death, son Wyatt Audabon was reared by his Uncle J. W. [James Washington] Garrett. Son Robert H. Garrett was reared by his Uncle Powhatan Green Garrett. Remaining children Edward Everett and Alice Roberta stayed with their mother ... see general notes on Mary Ann Eliza Walker for 1870 census facts.
