After Robert's death in the war, she married Howell Lewis on Feb. 8, 1872; however, the 1870 census records the following: The 1870 Federal Census for Warrensburg P. O., Post Oak, Johnson Co., Missouri, page 569A, dated August 17, 1870 records Mary E. Garrett (37 - NC) with her children Robert (14), James (13), Everett (10), and Alice (9) living next door to Mary E. Garrett's husband's sister, Susan Garrett Thompson, and her family. Mary is keeping house with real estate valued at $1,200 and a personal estate valued at $225. The children Robert & James are listed as "Works on farm".
The 1880 Federal Census records Howell and Mary A. Lewis living in Deer Creek, Henry Co., Missouri with children Everett and Alice Garrett.
Mary married Howell Lewis. (Howell Lewis was born on 10 Jul 1808 and died on 11 Apr 1883.)
Mary next married Robert J. Garrett, son of James Garrett and Elizabeth Sims, on 27 Feb 1855 in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., N.C. (Robert J. Garrett was born on 17 Apr 1830 in Garrett Farm Near Madison, N.C. and died on 16 Aug 1862 in Lone Jack, Missouri In Civil War.)
