Also in the household is house worker Howard Mahitable (64 - NY) [This is most likely John's mother-in-law Mehetabel Howe Howard].

The 1870 Federal Census for teh Town of Stockton, Chautauqua Co., New York, Sinclaireville P. O., page 694A records John (40 - NY) and Marietta (38 - PA) Delaney (indexed as Delancy at ancestry.com) with children Ella (16 - NY), Ada (14 - NY), William (13 - NY), Elmer (9 - NY), and Jay (6). John is a grocer with real estate valued at $1,500 and a personal estate at $2,000.

The 1880 Federal Census for Cherry Creek Village, Chautauqua Co., New York, District 44, page 115A, dated June 1,1880 records John (52 - NY/NY/NY) and Mary E. (52 - PA/PA/PA) Delaney with children Ella M. (26 - NY/NY/PA), S. Ada (24 - NY/NY/PA), G. Elmer (19 - NY/NY/PA), and Bertie (6 - NY/NY/PA). John is listed as a retired Merchant.

The 1900 Federal Census for Cherry Creek Village, Chautauqua Co., New York, District 81, page 105A records John Delaney (indexed as Delana at ancestry.com) (Feb 1828 - NY/NY/NY) and wife Mary (Dec 1831 - NY/NY/NY) with daughter Ella (Aug 1852 - NY/NY/NY) and grand daughter Grace James (March 1887 - NY/NY/NY. John is listed as a Boot and Shoe Maker while Mary & Ella are listed as Dress Maker. John and Mary have been married for 47 years and have had 6 children of which 4 are still living. Ella is listed as single.

The 1910 Federal Census for Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., New York, District 112, page 2B records Mary Delany (77-widow) with daughter Helen [Ella] (52-Dress Maker).

The 1920 Federal Census for Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., New York, District 114, page 2B records Mary Delaney (88-widow) with daughter Ella (65-Dress Maker) renting a place on South Side Ave.

John (Jonathon) DeLaney was born on 16 Feb 1828 in Hartland, Niagara Cty., N. Y. He died on 31 Aug 1900 in Cherry Creek, N. Y. He married Mary E. Howard on 19 Dec 1852 in Stockton, N.Y., daughter of Lyman Howard and Mehetabel Howe. She was born on Dec 1831 in Pine Valley, Warren, PA. She died on 09 Jun 1928 in the home of her granddaughter in Prattsville, N.Y.

John DeLaney
One of the most ably conducted grocery stores in Cherry Creek is that of John DeLaney. This prosperous business was established in 1892. The store is nicely fitted up and supplied with every convenience. His stock is good and varied, comprising new crop of teas, fragrant coffee, pure spices, canned goods of all kinds, popular brands of flour, sugar, etc. The stock is always new and fresh, and goods are sold at the very lowest prices. Mr. DeLaney has had many years of experience, and conducts his business upon prompt and honorable methods. He was born in the town of Hartland, Niagara County, N. Y., February 16, 1838. Early in life he learned the tanner's trade and shoemaker's trade. In Stockton, this county, he was engaged in the grocery, boot and shoe business for a number of years. He came to Cherry Creek in 1872, where he has been in business ever since. He married Miss Mary E. Howard of Pomfret, December 9, 1852, and to them have been born three sons and two daughters as follows: Ella M., residing at home; Sarah A., who married Robert James, now deceased; Wilton H., salesman in Jones & Audett's store in Jamestown; G. Elmer, now engaged in hardware business at Shortsville, this state; Bert E., a stenographer and book keeper in Lancaster, PA.
