bullet  General Notes:

The following narrative is part of a Presentation Address by
Franklin Freeman given June 11, 1996 to the Supreme Court of North Carolina during the dedication of portrait to honor Justice Susie Sharp who was the GGGG Grand daughter of John Sharp (see notes on Susie Sharp for the complete speech):
The progenitor of the Sharp family of Rockingham, N.C., John Sharp, came from Buckingham County, Virginia to the area that became Rockingham County in approximately 1760. At that time, the area was a part of Rowan County. John Sharp died in early 1778 and was survived by his wife Catherine and nine children, one of which, James Sharp, was the only son of John's to remain in Rockingham County. He and his wife had two sons, including James Jr., born in approximately 1766, and one daughter. James Jr. (1766 - 1852) married Jane (Jenny) Joyce (1768 - aft 1850). Six children were born to this union including James Archer Sharp, born January 4, 1804.

The 1850 Federal Census for the Western District of Rockingham County, NC., page 85 records James (46) and Mary (49) [Margaret] Sharp with children John (22), Alexander (18), Calvin (16), Benja F. (14), Sarah J. (9), James M. (7), Joseph T. (3), and Mariah (6/12). Next door is J. A. Sharp Jr. (26) and his family: Mary (23), Samuel D. (5), Mary E. (3), and Fannie E. (6/12). Most family histories do not list this person as a son of our James Archer Sharp, however, he is living next door to our James and while James has real estate valued at $2,500, this J. A. Sharp has real estate with no value, an indication he is living on the older Sharp's farm. This J. A. Sharp can be followed in the 1860 census in Wilkes Co., N.C. (see notes on this individual) and is probably the son of our James Archer Sharp.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Northern Division of Rockingham County, NC., page 114B records James A. (56) and Margaret (49) Sharp with children James (16), Joseph (13), and Susan (10). James has real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property at $8,414. James has 5 slaves in what appears to be a family: male (40), female (43), female (15), male (13), and male (4).
