bullet  General Notes:

James Marshall Sharp fought for the Confedarate States of America in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company F, 45th North Carolina Infantry on Sept 1, 1862 at the age of 22. On July 1, 1863 he was wounded at Gettysburg but recovered and rejoined his unit by Nov. 30, 1863. He was wounded again and captured at the Battle of Spottslyvania Court House. He returned to duty but was captured March 25, 1865 at Petersburg. He was confined to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland where he spent the remainder of the war. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 20, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD.

The 1880 Federal Census for the New Bethel Township, Rockingham County, NC., District 231, page 96A, dated June 1, 1880 records James M. (36 - NC/NC/NC) and Eliza (35 - NC/NC/NC) Sharp with children Willie (12), Adolphus (11), Robert (9), John (5), James (1), and Bertha (6/12 - Dec). James is a Farmer.

The 1900 Federal Census for the New Bethel Township, Rockingham County, NC., District 78, page 156A records J. M. Sr. (Mar 1844) and Eliza M. (Aug 1845) Sharp with children William W. (Oct 1867), Adolphus A. (Nov 1868), John B. (May 1876), James M. Jr. (Sept 1878), Bertha (Dec 1879), Joseph A. (Mar 1882), and Calvin R. (Aug 1884). James and Eliza report being married for 36 years and having had 10 children of which 8 are still living. James Jr. is listed as a teacher while J. M., William, Adolphus, and John are farmers. Calvin is a farm hand. Also in the household is adopted son, Richard Roberts (June 1893 - NC/NC/NC).

The 1910 Federal Census for the New Bethel Township, Rockingham County, NC., District 161, page 180B taken in April 1910 records J. M. Sr. (66) and Eliza M. (64) Sharp with son Adolphus A. Sharp (41).

Garrett Farm Near Madison, N.C, died on 22 Aug 1938 in Madison, Rockingham Co, NC and was buried on 24 Aug 1938 in Sardis Church, Madison, NC.) The cause of her death was Senility.
