John Kavanaugh

  General Notes:

The 1880 Federal Census records a John Kavanaugh (73) living in Columbia Township, Wapello Co., Iowa with wife Mary A. (71) and daughter Cynthia A. (30). John indicates his parents were born in Ireland but he was born in Ohio.

The 1870 Federal Census records a John Cavanaugh living in Columbia Township, Wapello Co. (Eddyville Post Office), Iowa with wife Mary A. and daughter Cynthia and son Samuel. This is most likely the correct family for Samuel in that apparent future wife Elsie resides in the same town but more research is needed (June 2004).

The 1860 Federal Census records a John Cavanaugh living in Columbia Township, Wapello Co. (Eddyville Post Office), Iowa with wife Mary A. and children William, Amanda J., Sarah A., CintheA,, and Samuel L. C. This is most likely the correct family for Samuel in that this family remains in the same town through the next census but more research is needed (June 2004). It should be noted that Cythnia is listed as born in Ohio while Samuel is born in Iowa. Later census records are not consistent with this.

The 1850 Federal Census records a John Kavanaugh (42) living in Wapello Co. , Iowa with wife Mary (40) and children Elizabeth (18), James (17), William (15), Amanda (12), Catherine (10), Sarah (7), Ann (4), and Samuel (1). All of the children are born in Ohio except Ann and Samuel meaning the family moved to Iowa about 1845.

John married Mary A. (Mary A. was born about 1809 in Virginia.)
