The 1880 Federal Census for Pigg River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, District 172 records Preston Adkins (36) and wife Martha A. (32) with children Charles K. (5), Wm. B. (3), Cally (12), Nelly G. (9), and Mary M. (1). Also in the household is mother Sallie Jone (53) [mother-in-law]. A few doors away is Charles K. Adkins' future wife E. Francis McDowell (18). She is living with her parents Jos. T. (44) and Martha F. (39) McDowell and siblings David F. (20), Jno. H. (12), Jos. L. (10), Jos. P. (8), Nannie T. (14), Mary E. (6), Lavicy (4), and Sallie M. (2). (see notes on Eunice McDowell)

Sallie Jones (48) [mother-in-law] is living with the family. Next door is brother-in-law William P. Jones (22) with wife Louisa (18) and son William (1).

The 1860 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., Virginia lists a Sally Jones (33) with children John (14), Perkins (12) and Martha A. (10) living in Museville District of Pittsylvania Co., Va.

The Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, taken Oct 19, 1850 records Mark H. Jones (26) and wife Sally Jones (23) with children John (4), William (2) and Martha A. (1/12). Martha A. Jones will become the wife of Ballard Preston Adkins. Ballard is just two pages over in the census.

The 1900 Federal Census for Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Va. (ED#75, page 312A) records Ballard P (May 1844) and Martha (May 1848) Adkins with children Rofser (March 1884-son), Mattie (March 1886), Mary (1889), and Lueiza (April 1893). Also in the household is mother-in-law Sallie Jones (April 1821). Next door is son Wm B. Adkins (March 1877) and his wife Mollie (April 1876) with daughter Alie (March 1899).

The 1910 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., VA, (ED#89, page 74A) records Ballard P. and Martha A. Adkins living near his mother, Permillia Adkins.

Ballard Preston Adkins enlisted on March 24, 1864 as a Private in Company I, 21st Infantry Regiment Virginia. Co. I was known as The Turkey Cock Grays due to the fact that most of the soldiers came from the Turkey Cock Mountain area of Henry/Pittsylvania Co., Va. He was wounded on May 5, 1864 at The Battle of The Wilderness, VA. He was furloughed on January 21, 1865 for 30 days. His physical description:
