The 1860 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., page 34 records George Hankins (21), son of John (55) and Eleanor (57) Hankins living a few homes away from future wife, Abigail Lawrence and her family.

The 1870 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood, page 31A records George B. (31) and Abigal [Lawrence] (24) Hankins with children John S. (3) and Joseph H. (1) living next to Abbie's father, Samuel Lawrence, and his family. Nearby is Samuel's widowed mother, Gilly Lawrence and his brother, Darling Lawrence & family.

The 1880 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood, District 129, page 76A records George (41) and Abigal [Lawrence] (32) Hankins with children John S. (13), Joseph H. (12), and G. Peter (8) living nearby to Abbie's father, Samuel Lawrence, and his family. Samuel's brother, Meredith Lawrence, & family are also in the area.

The 1900 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood, District 51, page 87B records the widow Abigal [Lawrence] Hankins (Nov 1845) with son George P. (Feb 1871) and daughter-in-law Lillie M. Lawrence (Jan 1879). Living nearby are Abbie's sons and their families: John S. Lawrence (May 1867) with his wife Ida W. (Aug 1873) and daughter May B. (Nov 1894) and Joseph H. Lawrence (Jan 1868) with his wife Laura B. (Nov 1872) and their children Hattie I. (Dec 1892), Mary S. (June 1895), Gracy E. (June 1896), and Routh B. (Jan 1899). Interesting that death records for Henry Co indicate George died in 1903 yet this census record has Abby as a widow.

Also ... death records for Henry Co indicate Abby died in 1923 yet the 1920 census record does not list Abby, although the three sons are all living next to each other in Leatherwood: The 1920 Federal Census, Virginia, Henry Co., Leatherwood, District 112, page 155A records Geprge P. Hankins (48) with his wife Nannie M. (38) and children William B. (18), Elsie L. (17), and Sallie (7 6/12); Joe H. Hankins (51) with his wife Lara B. (45) and children Ruth B. (20), Emma L. (16), Jim C. (14), Gertrude (9 2/12), and Nannie S. (7 1/12); and John S. Hankins (54) with his wife Ida W. (46) and children George (16), Myrtle (12), Odessa (10), Edward (6 2/12), and Justise (3 2/12).

George married Abigail E. Lawrence, daughter of Samuel Ervin Lawrence and Rebecca E. Campbell. (Abigail E. Lawrence was born about 1846 in Leatherwood, Henry Co., VA. and died on 12 Mar 1924 in Leatherwood, Henry Co. Virginia ⁹².)
