HERTFORD -- Ruben Wilson Miles, 84, of the 100 block of Pinewood Trail, died Dec. 25, 2002, in his home.
Born in Isle of Wight County, he was the widower of Hazel Doughtie Miles and the son of the late Lillian Outland and Ruben Lee Miles. He retired as a shipfitter with Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop No. 11, Portsmouth. Miles was a member of Chapel On the Sound where he was a former deacon, taught Sunday school, was a former Sunday school superintendent and a choir member. He was a Mason and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Rita M. Jeffress and husband, Jeff, of Hertford; two sons, Carroll L. Miles and wife, Kathy, of Chesapeake and Terry L. Miles of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters, Verl Waterfield of Smithfield and Christine Spivey of Windsor, Va.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Danny Miles, a sister, Lucille Beckett and a brother, Cecil Miles.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral Home. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with entombment taking place at 3 p.m. in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk.
Ruben Wilson Miles was a Mason and was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Chapel on the Sound, Hertford, North Carolina.
