Joseph Zook was born in Bern Township on march 3, 1787. Joseph first married Anna Shook and they became the parents of six children. Then, as a widower, he married Catharine Whisler and they settled in Lancaster County, Pa. about a mile north of Chamberburg. Joseph and Catharine had five children. The burying ground on the family plantation, the final resting place for many Zooks, is now known as Siloam Cemetery.

The following was taken from a Memo 10/22/1932 from A.E. Lacy, Detroit, Mich. based on data from Mae (Zook) Van Derem:
After the death of Josph's first wife in 1825, he was left with six children all under eight years of age. He had previously bought and owned the grist and fulling mills from his father and was a man of substantial resources. His mother and wife had died, and Abraham died in 1828. Joseph sold the property and moved to Green Twp, Franklin Co, Pa, just north of Chambersburg, where he acquired much land. He had a dam and grist mills there and was very well-to-do. In 1830 he married Catherine Whisler (1800-1885), a very fine woman, who reared the family and bore him five children. Joseph's children by his first wife were six, and five by his second wife.
