Charles King (Charles, William, Michael the Elder) in 1748 was living on land in Bertie County on Rocquist Pocosin purchased by his father in 1742. Rocquist Pocosin is not to be confused with the area around Salmon Creek where their King cousins lived. The 1742 deed in which the land was purchased by Charles King identifies him as being from Chowan County. He did not live in Bertie County as shown by tax records. It is likely that the land was purchased for his sons. It will eventually be shown that all five sons of Charles King lived on Rocquist Pocosin at one time or the other. In 1748 Charles acquired additional land from [his brother] William King and the deed from William identified Charles as "my loving brother".
Charles King lived on this land and additional land that he purchased the remainder of his life. His first wife was Judith Wimberley, daughter of Thomas Wimberley who died in 1752. The marriage was probably between 1750 and 1755. Charles later married Mildred Benton on 12 December 1787. He wrote his will in Bertie County in 1817 and died the following year, probably about ninety years of age. His will and estate papers identify his children. Other information pertaining to the children are from land records.
Children of Charles King
William KING - was in Sumner County Tennessee in 1823. This is not the William King who married Abigail Lee in 1791.
Willie KING - was the youngest son and still a minor when his father died. He did, however, inherit most of the property. Unfortunately, he died in 1820, still a minor and unmarried. His inheritance was eventually, after much litigation, divided among his brothers and sisters (all 14 of them) or their heirs.
Thomas KING - b. about 1765. Married Tempy, surname unknown. Died intestate in Bertie County in 1799. His only child, a daughter Frances, married Timothy Garrett and was in Sumner County Tennessee in 1820.
Isles KING - resided outside the state in 1820.
Charles KING - Married Elizabeth Rhodes, daughter of Thomas Rhodes in 1783 and secondly Elizabeth Benton 11 July 1796. Charles only outlived his father by one year and died in 1819. The death of this father and son in such close proximity resulted in litigation to straighten out their estates, especially as one of the princapal heirs, Wilie King died in 1820.
Benton KING - Married Sally Smith
Henry KING - was in Wake County in 1829 and could have later moved to Tennessee.
Judith KING - Married John Williams and later moved to Sumner County, Tennessee.
Sarah KING - Married William Williams
Francis KING - Married Joshua Lee, son of Henry Lee and wife Sarah Sholar. Moved to Guilford County about 1798.
Nancy (Ann) KING - Married Cornelius Williams
Jerusha KING - Either she or her sister JEMIMA married someone named Holleman and was living outside the state in 1820.
Martha (Patsy) KING - Married Rigdon Jenkins 18 September 1798 and was dead by 1825.
Jemima KING - see JERUSHA above. Living outside the state in 1820.
Mary (Polly) KING - Married Frederick Wimberley
