Theophilus (Ophilus) Daughtrey 65
- Born: Isle Of Wright
- Marriage: Lucreacy Gardner on 2 May 1782 in Southampton Co, VA.
- Died: Cir 1814, Isle of Wight Co., VA
General Notes:
According to Emily C. Daughtrey: "Theopilus was the older brother of Richard. He had two children, Soloman and Matthew; Soloman went out West and nothing more was heard of him. Matthew was well to do and he had two children; Harriet, who married Tom Jenkins (see Theop(h)ilus Daughtrey, person ID 89) and to which union two children were born: Tom and Pauline; Matthew's other child, Emmeline, married Bill Allen but had no children." ... My research has indicated the following: Theophilus was actually a 1st cousin of Richard Daughtrey, great grand father of Emily. This Theophilus was the older brother of a Mathew and Solomon Daughtrey. This Theophilus had a son named Mathew and his children, Harriet and Emmeline (Fanny), are documented in Wills, Deeds, and Census records for Isle of Wight Co., VA. This researcher suspects that Mathew Daughtrey owned and operated the Daughtrey Mill ca 1810 (located on the currently named Jenkins Mill Road just north of Eley Daughtrey's old homeplace). Mathew's son-in-law, Tom Jenkins, most probably became owner and operator of the mill and thus the road was named for the then owner of the Mill. [The current (2007) name of the road is Jenkins Mill Road.]
A letter from Ola Daughtrey to Ethel Daughtrey Ellis ca 1970 states that "Harriet married Turley Jenkins, Emiline m. Bill Allen, left no heirs. Turley Jenkins left 6 children, 4 now, others dead." Actually, my research has found the following: Harriet's husband "Turley" is actually Harriet's son, Thomas Turley Jenkins. It is documented that Tom and Harriet had a son, Thomas Turley Jenkins, who was born in 1866, and married a woman named Grace and had 7 children.
A 1782 census in Isle of Wight Co., VA records the following Head of Families: Matthew Daughtry (5 white & 0 black), Joshua Daughtry (4 white & 4 black), Theophilus Daughtry (5 white & 0 black), John Daughtry (5 white & 10 black), Thomas Daughtry (3 white & 1 black), and Moses Daughtry (4 white & 0 black).
